UK Conservative leader pledges to abolish inheritance tax on family homes
Badenoch said the plan would cut the number of families paying inheritance tax by more than half and let couples pass on an extra £1 million tax-free.
On Wednesday, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch pledged that a future Conservative government will legislate to abolish inheritance tax on family homes and allow couples to pass on an additional £1 million tax-free.
Framing the next election as a 'battle for the soul of the nation,' Badenoch criticized the governing Labour Party as 'addicted to welfare' and accused it of drowning the country in debt while pledging tax relief.
Badenoch clarified the party would not abolish the levy immediately, citing fiscal priorities including the £10 billion 'Britannia Shield' defense system and funding 50,000 new prison places while cutting the deficit.
Trade Unions Congress general secretary Paul Nowak criticized the plan, noting 95 per cent of estates currently pay no inheritance tax and labeling it the 'same old Tory playbook' prioritizing the wealthy.
Facing an uphill battle in opinion polls, the Conservative Party sits third following its 2024 electoral defeat, though Badenoch admitted there is 'still a lot of work to do' to restore public trust.
