Zoar Lutheran Church to host forum on the history of KKK, hate groups in Ohio – BG Independent News

From ZOAR LUTHERAN CHURCH Zoar Lutheran Church, 314 E. Indiana Ave., Perrysburg, will host an adult community forum for learning, reflection, and conversation about the history and continuing presence of organized hate movements in Ohio. The forum will explore the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in northwest Ohio and the broader history of organized hate movements. The event will take place on Sunday, June 14, from 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. All adults are welcome to attend this respectful and welcoming community forum. The forum will explore the question, “What can the history of hate groups in Ohio teach us about our communities today?” Presenters will examine the rise of the KKK in northwest Ohio during the 1920s as well as more recent extremist movements across the state. Dr. Donna J. Laird will discuss the history of the KKK in Wood County during the 1920s, including its influence on local communities, churches, and public life. Dr. Melissa Miller will explore the broader history of hate groups in Ohio and examine how these movements continue to shape society today. Building on the work of BGSU historian Dr. Michael Brooks, this forum is intended to encourage thoughtful discussion, historical understanding, and community awareness. The event is designed for adults and will provide space for reflection and conversation in a respectful setting. All adults are welcome. No RSVP is needed.
