Ukraine Preparing Contract to Buy 25 Patriot Systems
Ukraine aims to enhance missile defense with 25 Patriot systems delivered annually under a multi-year deal amid ongoing conflict, officials said.
- On October 19, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Ukraine is preparing a long-term contract with the United States to acquire 25 Patriot air defense systems.
- The process has involved extensive coordination across government, with Yuliia Svyrydenko, Andriy Yermak, and Rustem Umerov leading recent talks with American counterparts.
- Because of a production backlog, delivery of all Patriot systems at once is impossible due to manufacturers' existing contracts, and some Patriot batteries currently deployed in Europe are operated by US forces or allied militaries.
- Ukraine's Air Force notes that one Patriot battery covers a roughly 25-kilometer radius, so several batteries are needed to defend large cities, and talks also focus on expanding long-range strike capabilities and industry cooperation.
- The White House can adjust orders if political will exists, and Zelenskyy said goodwill could help obtain American systems stationed in Europe while Ukraine negotiates to move up the delivery queue and met with Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.
