Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Faces Another Power Outage | Science-Environment
The IAEA said the plant is using diesel generators to cool six shut-down reactors after the 19th complete power outage since 2022.
- On Thursday, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost external power following an overnight strike on Wednesday, marking the 19th complete outage since the war began.
- The strike hit an electrical substation powering the facility; the site has remained Russian-occupied since shortly after the invasion began, complicating safety inspections for the damaged line.
- Backup diesel generators are currently powering the facility to "power the cooling of its six shut-down reactors and maintain other essential nuclear safety functions," the IAEA stated, with radiation levels confirmed normal.
- IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned, "The latest loss of off-site power once again highlights the extreme fragility of the electrical grid and the constant dangers to nuclear safety during the war."
- Both Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused one another of risking a nuclear disaster through strikes near the site, while the National Electricity Company Ukrenergo reported the outage.
