YouTuber draws the viewer under the Salish Sea in Sidney
Volunteer divers removed about 250 kilograms of abandoned gear in a permitted cleanup that Swan says is meant to raise awareness of ghost gear.
On Oct. 4, Langford diver Ryan Swan and community partners removed roughly 250 kilograms of abandoned crab traps, nets, and rope from the Salish Sea near Sidney, targeting waters between two piers at the base of Beacon Avenue.
Swan launched his Sea Adventures YouTube channel to prioritize conservation and education, documenting underwater explorations designed to inspire a protective nature in waterway users.
To enhance engagement, Swan included interactive quiz questions regarding ghost gear in his latest video, utilizing a newer YouTube feature for the first time to make technical training content fun.
Swan acknowledged the project's direct ocean impact remains small compared to global ghost gear loss, yet said he hopes the story brings necessary attention and awareness to the issue.
The South Island diver previously drew attention to rare ancient cloud sponges in the Saanich Inlet, showcasing his ongoing commitment to documenting delicate underwater ecosystems.
