YouTube Boosts Premium Lite Plan With Two Big Feature Changes

Starting today, Premium Lite subscribers can access offline downloads and background playback as YouTube rolls out these $7.99 per month features globally in the coming weeks.
YouTube said it heard feedback from pilot program participants requesting downloads and background play, prompting updates after Premium Lite expanded to the US and other global markets last year.
Most videos on Lite gain downloads and background play, but YouTube Shorts and music content still show ads and lack these features, which remain exclusive to YouTube Premium .
The cheaper tier may tempt price-sensitive customers as YouTube Premium Lite’s downloads and background play make a full Premium subscription less necessary, said Alphabet’s Q4 earnings.
