Virginia Gov. Youngkin Hosts Governor-Elect Spanberger at Executive Mansion
Outgoing Governor Youngkin pledges support to Governor-elect Spanberger to ensure a smooth transition focusing on food security and health care.
- On Thursday, Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin met Democratic governor-elect Abigail Spanberger at the Virginia Executive Mansion to begin the handoff before her Jan. 17 inauguration at the Virginia Statehouse.
- Following the vote that expanded Democratic control, Abigail Spanberger, governor-elect, became the first woman elected to lead Virginia, with her win aiding party gains ahead of 2026 midterms.
- Regarding priorities, she said `I will first focus on housing, the economy and lowering healthcare costs,` Spanberger told FOX 5.
- Over lunch at the Virginia Executive Mansion, Youngkin pledged cooperation, saying `That's what this is all about and that's why this transition period is one of cooperation to make sure that Governor-elect Spanberger's administration is ready to go on day one and any way that we can help in that, we'll do,` as their families discussed logistics.
- Over the course of the next roughly 10 weeks, Abigail Spanberger, governor-elect, will build her team as the transition proceeds and could influence energy policy under the Virginia Clean Economy Act and Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
