Eli Zeira, head of the Military Intelligence Directorate during the Yom Kippur War and one of the central and controversial figures in Israeli security, has passed away at the age of 97. Zeira carries with him a long-standing legacy alongside harsh public criticism following the Agranat Commission's determination that he was the most senior person responsible for the surprise of the war.
Zeira, 97 years old at the time of his death, joined the Palmach, served as a platoon commander and company commander in the first battalion of the Yiftach Brigade during the War of Independence. He accompanied the IDF from the beginning of his career until his last position as head of the Intelligence Division.
