Yemen Airport Shut Down Amid Saudi-UAE Rift
Yemen's Aden Airport shutdown followed Saudi-imposed flight inspections linked to UAE amid escalating Saudi-UAE tensions and STC advances near Saudi borders, officials said.
- On Friday, Saudi warplanes struck forces backed by the United Arab Emirates with seven airstrikes on an STC camp in the Al-Khasah area of Hadramawt, killing at least seven and injuring more than 20.
- Last month, the Southern Transitional Council seized control of Hadramawt and Mahra governorates, taking an oil-rich region from Saudi-backed forces, while Saudi demands for STC withdrawal have been refused.
- Salem al-Khanbashi was appointed Friday to lead Saudi-backed forces and described the operation as peaceful; Mohammed al-Jaber said Riyadh's mediation delegation was blocked from landing in Aden.
- Gen. Turki al-Maliki said Friday Saudi-backed naval forces deployed across the Arabian Sea to inspect and combat smuggling, while Yemen's transport ministry suspended UAE flights and ordered Aden flights inspected in Jeddah.
- The strikes deepen a rift between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates , heightening tensions and risking escalation in Yemen's decade-long civil war, one of the Gulf Cooperation Council's biggest crises since 2017.
