Xbox 360 Games Will Reportedly Be Available on PC and Project Helix in the Next Few Years
The leaked roadmap says developers can opt in without extra engineering, set prices and choose Game Pass availability for 360 titles.
- According to a leaked document seen by The Verge, Microsoft plans to bring Xbox 360 games to PC and the upcoming Project Helix hardware, requiring no additional engineering work from developers.
- An official emulator, dubbed Xe03 or Fission, powers the ability to run legacy games on Xbox One and Xbox Series hardware, including a disc-to-digital program binding physical discs to player accounts.
- Developers retain control over pricing and Game Pass availability for these PC versions as the industry moves away from physical media, a trend Rockstar Games highlighted by announcing Grand Theft Auto 6 would ship without a disc.
- Although a public beta was slated for July, The Verge reports the program faced delays; Microsoft now aims for a "full launch" in October, though specific timing for all users remains unclear.
- Within Fission lies an emulator called XeFu, or Fusion, enabling original Xbox game emulation, with Microsoft expecting a gradual rollout for next-gen hardware between 2027 and 2028.

Microsoft has already said that Helix will be playable on PC, so making these older Xbox games available will help create an even larger library of Xbox games that can be played across devices, similar to what's already possible with Steam. Creating all of these digital licenses will also help prepare for future gaming PCs without disc drives. Sony has already announced that game discs are obsolete, and Microsoft may follow suit.
