Ireland Record Historic Victory over South Africa in Cape Town
Ireland scored six tries and pulled away after halftime in the teams’ first meeting in 20 years, officials said.
On Saturday, Ireland defeated South Africa 40-27 at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, scoring six tries in the first of two WXV Global Series showdowns.
Ireland entered the interval with a 21-17 advantage before dominating the second half, though both teams struggled defensively throughout the competitive, topsy-turvy encounter.
Linda Djougang scored two tries, while Aoife Dalton, Beibhinn Parsons, Jane Clohessy, and Erin King also crossed; Dannah O'Brien converted five of six tries.
Discipline proved challenging as Erin King and Eve Higgins both received yellow cards, forcing Ireland to play with 14 players during portions of the match.
Ireland head coach Scott Bemand will evaluate defensive frailties before next Saturday's rematch at the same venue, aiming to improve team performance.
