India to Host 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships
Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium is South Asia's largest with Category 1 certification and has hosted recent continental level events, officials said.
- On Thursday, the Athletics Federation of India president Bahadur Singh Sagoo confirmed India will host the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships at Bhubaneswar's Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium after World Athletics council awarded it in Torun, Poland.
- Completed in 2024, the Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium is South Asia's largest indoor venue, featuring a 200-meter synthetic track with 80m + 20m running track and seating capacity 1700.
- The venue will stage the inaugural National Indoor Championships on March 24 and 25 and is the front-runner to host the Asian Indoor Championships in 2028 after an Asian Athletics Association inspection last month.
- AFI officials say the decision boosts India's athletes and builds on hosting a World Athletics Bronze-level Continental tour event last year, upgrading to a silver-level event this year after hosting the World Half-Marathon in Delhi in 2004.
- Following January inspections, the World Athletics council awarded the event after a two-member delegation evaluated the venue in Bhubaneswar.
