Women's Institute to ban transgender members after Supreme Court ruling
The National Federation of Women’s Institutes will restrict membership to biological women from April 2026 following a UK Supreme Court ruling on legal sex definitions.
- On Wednesday , NFWI CEO Melissa Green confirmed the 110-year-old Women’s Institute will restrict formal membership to biological women only from April 2026.
- A recent Supreme Court ruling defined the legal meaning of 'woman' as biological sex, prompting the federation to act under this judgment while EHRC draft guidance excluding trans people faced criticism from legal experts and human rights groups.
- Launching alternatives, the NFWI will set up a national network of sisterhood groups offering monthly opportunities for all, including transgender women, while the CEO called the decision 'extremely painful' and said officials sought alternative pathways.
- Labour MPs warned the EHRC’s recommendations could create a 'minefield' for businesses in the UK, citing financial and staffing concerns, following Girlguiding UK’s similar change and April emergency protest.
- Despite the change, the organisation said it 'remains absolutely committed to delivering on that mission' and 'is still committed in its 'firm belief' that trans women are women'.
