Police Cordon Off Brighton Beach as Man 'Arrested on Suspicion of Rape'
Akiyas Jameldeen faces three sex offense charges after police say a woman in her 20s was attacked and officers arrested a suspect at the scene.
- On Wednesday, authorities charged Akiyas Jameldeen, 51, of Crawley, with two counts of oral rape and one count of sexual assault by penetration following an overnight attack on Brighton Beach.
- Sussex Police arrested the suspect at the scene near Black Rock car park after officers responded to reports of the incident at around 7:30am. The victim, in her 20s, is receiving support from specialist officers.
- Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Adam Hays commended the victim's bravery and said police will "create a hostile environment for those who seek to come to the city for the purpose of offending against vulnerable people."
- In a separate incident, a 51-year-old man was charged on Tuesday with rape and sexual assault following an attack on Madeira Drive, a seafront road, on Sunday morning.
- Previously, Hove Crown Court sentenced three men last month for a separate rape on Brighton Beach; Egyptian nationals Ibrahim Alshafe and Abdulla Ahmadi each received 21 years, while Karin Al-Danasurt was sentenced to 18 years and six months.
