Woman found dead and homes evacuated in Shrewsbury flat fire

The fire involved 10 fire engines and multiple emergency teams; one person suffered significant but non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

  • On Tuesday, emergency services were called at around 3.30am to a ground-floor flat fire on Windsor Place, where a woman in her 80s was pronounced dead.
  • Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service says the cause is under investigation and is not currently treated as suspicious, with a joint probe launched alongside West Mercia Police.
  • Ten fire appliances and crews were sent to the scene, with firefighters arriving within four minutes; specialist medical teams including Hazardous Area Response Team, MERIT trauma team, and critical care paramedic attended, and one other person had non-life-threatening injuries.
  • Nearby homes were evacuated and surrounding roads were closed, with authorities asking the public to avoid the area; Shropshire Council opened an emergency line on 03456789029 for evacuees.
  • Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service says the fire is now contained, but West Mercia Police Chief Constable Richard Cooper called it a "significant fire" and said services will remain for some time.
