Woman Fatally Hit By Car In San Mateo: Police

The pedestrian was struck in a marked crosswalk by a turning vehicle; the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the police investigation.

  • On Friday, San Mateo Police Department said a woman was fatally struck at around 10:30 a.m. at 17th Avenue and South El Camino Real.
  • The department's traffic unit is investigating after preliminary information indicates the vehicle turned north from Bovet Road onto northbound South El Camino Real and struck the pedestrian within the crosswalk.
  • Both lanes of South El Camino Real and the westbound Highway 92 exit to South El Camino Real were closed and traffic was rerouted for approximately three hours before the scene was cleared at 1:36 p.m., Officer Andrew Peek said the driver stopped and cooperated.
  • First responders found the pedestrian described only as a woman with critical injuries, and she was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced deceased shortly after; police asked witnesses to contact Traffic Officer Julio Jolivette at jjolivette@cityofsanmateo.org.
  • Community advocates noted a pattern after San Mateo police said they are investigating two other deadly crashes, with Mike Swire saying `Year after year, the city of San Mateo continues to see people dying on their streets`.
