Woman awarded $400K after Vernon dog attack left her with permanent injuries
The award includes $19,000 in court costs after the judge found the dog attack caused injuries that ended her nursing practice.
- On June 16, a Nanaimo court awarded Kaarina Schrott nearly $400,000 in compensation after finding Jocelyn Gaetan Roger liable for a 2020 dog attack in Vernon that caused life-altering injuries.
- During a December 3, 2020 jog in Vernon, Schrott was attacked by a "large, off-leash" dog belonging to Roger, which bit her elbow and dragged her to the ground before he intervened.
- Because Roger failed to respond to court notices, Justice Karrie Wolfe ruled he is deemed to have admitted liability, despite multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact him in Gold Bridge and Surrey.
- The award covers lost income, pain, suffering, and future care costs, as Schrott, 41 at the time of attack, abandoned her foot-care nursing practice and can no longer hike or ski.
