'Shut All Windows' Plea as Huge Wolverhampton Fire Guts Factory
Eight fire engines and multiple crews from surrounding areas are tackling a factory blaze that caused road closures and advised residents to keep windows closed.
- On Wednesday January 14, West Midlands Fire Service responded shortly after 7.30am to an active fire at a factory on Sunbeam Street near Upper Villiers Street in Blakenhall, Wolverhampton.
- West Midlands Fire Service said the blaze affected a significant factory building, with the first crew arriving within three minutes of being mobilised.
- The fire service deployed breathing apparatus and hose reel jets, initially sending eight fire engines, a 4×4 brigade vehicle and a hydraulic aerial platform, then increasing to 17 engines, two 4×4 vehicles, two aerial platforms and a drone team.
- Closures have been imposed on Upper Villiers Street between Marston Road and Sunbeam Street, with officials urging residents and workers to close doors, windows and avoid the St Luke's Church area as crews remain overnight.
- Smoke reports and eyewitness accounts show the plume affected air quality across the city, with thick black smoke and ash falling on homes and vehicles and the fire visible about 15 miles away.
