Dobbins Throws 6 Innings and Wetherholt Homers to Lead the Cardinals to a 1-0 Win over Angels
The move comes during a 20-game stretch in 20 days as the Cardinals manage their rotation after the All-Star break.
On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Angels 1-0 in Anaheim, with Hunter Dobbins earning his sixth career win and JJ Wetherholt hitting a 409-foot solo home run in the sixth inning.
Facing a grueling stretch of 20 games in 20 days coming out of the All-Star break, the Cardinals recalled Dobbins from Triple-A Memphis to protect the health of their starting staff.
Angels starter Reid Detmers took the loss after allowing one run on two hits over 5 1/3 innings, with Wetherholt's home run breaking the tie in the sixth inning.
Closer Riley O'Brien secured his 26th save by striking out two batters in the ninth, sealing the victory that snapped St. Louis's four-game losing streak and ended the Angels' three-game winning streak.
This result snapped a 106-game streak for the Angels when trailing after eight innings, while the Cardinals' shutout victory marked their first 1-0 win since May 17, 2025.
