Wisconsin Republican Tiffany says Zuckerberg money was the reason he tried to overturn 2020 election
Tiffany said $10 million in Zuckerberg-backed grants helped drive his objections to Wisconsin’s 2020 election results and absentee-ballot rules.
During Wednesday's debate at Marquette University Law School, Wisconsin Republican gubernatorial nominee Tom Tiffany defended his 2020 decision to oppose election certification, citing grants from the Zuckerberg-funded Center for Tech and Civic Life.
Tiffany referred to the funding as 'Zuckerbucks,' claiming it improperly influenced election administration; more than 200 Wisconsin communities received about $10 million in grants during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Endorsed by President Donald Trump, Tiffany supported attempts to disqualify 220,000 absentee ballots from Milwaukee and Dane counties and voted against counting electoral votes from Pennsylvania and Arizona.
Tiffany's opponent, Democrat David Crowley, called the explanation inadequate and argued that Tiffany cannot be trusted to certify future presidential election results.
Wisconsin voters approved a 2024 constitutional amendment banning private grant money for election administration, though Tiffany promised to certify the 2028 election regardless of the winner.
