Wisconsin groups demand UW Health restart gender-affirming care for transgender youth

Advocates say the hospitals’ pause has made access harder for transgender youth as more than 65 organizations urge services to resume.

  • On Thursday, more than 65 Wisconsin organizations published an open letter to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Children's Wisconsin, urging both institutions to resume gender-affirming care for minors suspended earlier this year.
  • The hospitals halted gender-affirming treatments in January following pressure from the Trump administration, which warned providers they risked losing federal funding for offering such services to minors.
  • Although a federal judge struck down the administration's policy last month, 66 groups signed the letter arguing the medical care is medically necessary, age-appropriate and accessed with informed consent of patients and parents.
  • UW Health and Children's Wisconsin have not resumed services, with spokespeople citing ongoing legal and regulatory uncertainty and stating that the current risk is too great to restart care.
  • Abigail Swetz, executive director of Fair Wisconsin, said the letter signals broad support for transgender youth, adding that advocates plan to continue organizing efforts until the hospitals restore these medical treatments.
