Winter Olympics Adds Synchro Skating and Freeride for 2030 in French Alps. Nordic Combined Dropped
The International Olympic Committee announced on Tuesday that the French Alps Winter Games will feature Freeride and Synchronized, while dropping Nordic combined from the 2030 program.
Nordic, a staple since the inaugural Winter Games in Chamonix in 1924, was cut because it struggled to attract a modern audience and remained the only discipline restricted to men.
Freeride involves athletes performing tricks on natural terrain, while Synchronized will debut in 2030 using the nine-member Synchro9 format.
The 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps will be the first to achieve gender parity, with 3,046 participants expected across 126 events.
Synchronized debuts as a female-only event at the 2028 Youth Winter Olympics in Italy, with future decisions pending regarding male participation in the French Alps.
