Desiree Scott Brings Pro Women’s Soccer to Winnipeg with NSL Expansion Club
The club is the league’s seventh women’s team and Manitoba’s first professional women’s side, with co-founders Desiree Scott and Rob Gale leading the launch.
On Monday, the Northern Super League announced that Winnipeg will join as the league's seventh franchise in 2027, co-founded by former Canadian women's national team player Desiree Scott and Rob Gale, former Canada Soccer youth national team coach.
After retiring from the NSL's Ottawa Rapid last year, Scott partnered with Gale, who most recently led the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League, to bring professional soccer to Manitoba.
Gale described Winnipeg as a 'snapshot of Canada,' noting that 90 per cent of the population lives within one hour of the city, positioning it advantageously for attracting world-class talent and fans.
League president Christina Litz confirmed the expansion is on schedule and will serve as a 'catalyst for Canadian talent,' while the club continues interviewing for a president and finalizing branding and venue details.
Bolstered by a $30 million investment from APEX, an international sports investment firm, the new franchise will commence pre-season preparations in February 2027, positioning the team for debut in the league's sophomore season.
