First Windows 10 ESU Patch Tuesday Release Fails for Some
The ESU update KB5068781 failed to install on many commercial Windows 10 devices, triggering error 0x800f0922 and prompting an immediate patch from Microsoft.
- On November 11, KB5068781 failed to install on devices activated via the Microsoft 365 admin center, returning 0x800f0922 and breaking the rollout for many commercial Windows 10 customers.
- Because WSUS and SCCM sometimes fail to flag enrolled devices, Microsoft's ESU program faces enrollment and activation issues for commercial Windows 10 customers after October 14, 2025.
- Microsoft said, 'The issue is under investigation, and additional information will be shared as soon as it becomes available', and at the time of writing there was no fix or workaround; this is the second ESU failure in a week affecting consumer and business customers.
- Microsoft issued KB5072653 on November 17, 2025; admins should install it, restart devices, then rerun Windows Update to apply the November ESU update KB5068781 successfully.
- Organizations that use cab files for compliance checks will receive updated metadata as Microsoft publishes a new Scan Cab for KB5072653 in the near future, and BleepingComputer is hosting a December 2 webinar with Action1.
