Historic England listed the 400-year-old Hall's Croft after a car damaged the former Shakespeare family home and conservation work faces a funding gap.
- Historic England added the 400-year-old Halls Croft in Stratford-upon-Avon to the Heritage at Risk Register following a car reversing into the property in October 2025, causing "substantial damage" to its structure.
- The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is currently stabilizing the Jacobean building and removing temporary steel supports installed in 2012 to prevent further deterioration before major restoration work begins.
- Playwright Ken Ludwig's £1m donation in 2024 funded initial conservation, yet the full restoration program is estimated between £8m and £10m, leaving a substantial funding shortfall.
- A fundraising scheme launched in December targets £500,000 to complete the project's second phase, addressing part of the remaining conservation costs for the property.
- Rachael North, chief executive of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, called the site of "exceptional historical importance," noting the register listing allows the Trust to build partnerships securing the building's future for generations.
