Wildfire near Lillooet still out of control, sees minimal growth
BCWS says the 50-hectare blaze is burning in steep, inaccessible terrain and is being monitored mainly by aircraft.
The Riley Creek wildfire, discovered about 25 kilometres south of Lillooet, remains out of control at 50 hectares. BC Wildfire Service officials continue monitoring the blaze as it burns in high-elevation terrain.
On Wednesday, June 24, lightning is believed to have sparked the Riley Creek wildfire and a second incident near Lytton. These high-elevation blazes were identified after initial reports emerged that afternoon.
Helicopters monitor the site as BCWS prioritizes responder safety in 'incredibly' steep, rocky, and unstable terrain. Implementing a modified response, the service utilizes these resources to assess suppression objectives.
Minimal growth occurred overnight, with the fire burning at Rank 1 and 2 as of Friday, June 26. This classification indicates a slow-moving, smouldering ground fire with limited flame activity.
Crews will be deployed for suppression only if the fire moves downslope into accessible areas where safe objectives can be achieved. Until then, frequent flights will continue monitoring the blaze and assessing conditions.
