WHO's new Global status report highlights the growing burden of neurological disorders
Only 32% of countries have policies on neurological disorders and low-income nations have up to 82 times fewer neurologists, WHO reports highlight urgent care gaps.
- Today, the World Health Organization released a first-of-its-kind global report showing neurological conditions affect more than 40% of the global population — over 3 billion people — causing over 11 million deaths annually.
- Of 194 WHO Member States, only 53% contributed data, with just 32% having a national policy on neurological disorders and only 25% including them in universal health coverage benefit packages.
- The report lists the top 10 neurological conditions, including stroke, neonatal encephalopathy, migraine and Alzheimer's disease, while essential services like stroke units remain out of reach in rural and underserved areas.
- Low-Income countries face up to 82 times fewer neurologists per population than high-income nations, while only 46 countries offer carer services and 44 have legal protections, leaving informal carers unrecognised.
- In 2022, Member States adopted the Intersectoral global action plan on epilepsy and other neurological disorders, while WHO urges governments to prioritize care and improve weak health information systems in low- and middle-income countries.
