Who are we in debt to?

Did you ever wonder who someone as big as the United States of America could owe money to? This is what I came up with: The “Fed” (central bank?) prints money in the mints. The fed loans the money to the big banks at a low interest rate. Then when America runs out of money at the end of the year America borrows that money from the big banks at a high interest rate.
