Which? warns Brits of 'dangerous' scam involving every day card payments
Which? says victims who approve card payments after cold calls may face tougher refund claims, even when scammers use one-time passcodes or banking apps.
Which? warned that criminals are using tactics similar to authorised push payment scams to manipulate victims into approving fraudulent card payments through deceptive cold calls.
Fraudsters typically pose as bank security staff or regulators, claiming accounts are under attack and urging victims to approve payments or share one-time passcodes to 'block' or 'reverse' supposed fraud.
Lisa Webb, a consumer law expert at Which?, noted card payments fall outside the automatic refund protections banks must provide for authorised push payments, leaving victims vulnerable.
Victims should contact their bank first, then escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service if treated unfairly, providing full details of how they were manipulated into approving payments.
The Financial Conduct Authority and Finance urge people to stay alert; if you receive an unexpected call claiming to be from your bank, hang up and call back using the number on your card.
