- The actor gained wide recognition in the 1985 hit 'Back to the Future' as Hill Valley High School vice principal Mr. Strickland, who memorably berated characters like Marty McFly as "slackers."
- In the 1986 blockbuster 'Top Gun', he played Commander Tom Jardian, nicknamed Stinger, who famously scolded Maverick with the line, "Your ego is writing checks your body can't cash."
- Tolkan is survived by his wife, Parmelee, whom he met on the set of the 1971 play 'Pinkville'. His final screen credit was the 2015 Kurt Russell western 'Bone Tomahawk'.
