Midterms 2026: When Will We Actually Know Who Won Congress?
Mail ballots, ranked-choice rules and close margins could delay final congressional calls for days or weeks, officials and news organizations said.
On Tuesday, voters cast ballots in midterm races where results could take days to finalize, as The Associated Press will project winners only when confident trailing candidates cannot close the gap.
State-Specific procedures, including ranked-choice voting in Alaska and Maine, along with new rules requiring officials to verify Social Security or driver's license numbers, are expected to extend the counting timeline.
Republicans currently hold 219 House seats—just one more than the majority—while the Senate stands at 53-47; a 2024 House race with a 187-vote margin was not called until 29 days after the election.
If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote in ranked-choice races, second-choice votes are redistributed to determine a winner, and some races could advance to runoffs held in December.
All reported results remain unofficial until certified by states, and batches of ballots arriving in the weeks following Election Day are a normal part of the process determining which party reaches 218 seats.
With broad margins the results could be clear already during the night of Wednesday. If instead the balances will depend on disputed circuits it may be necessary to wait days
