Trump’s China Visit Watched in US for Signs of Stability – and Tangible Wins
Trump seeks Chinese commitments to buy U.S. goods and ease export controls as the summit aims to stabilize trade ties.
US President Donald Trump heads to Beijing this week for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, seeking trade commitments and Beijing's assistance resolving his unpopular war with Iran.
During their last meeting in South Korea in October 2025, Trump and Xi agreed to a twelve-month suspension of tit-for-tat tariffs. Their relationship remains marked by deep distrust and mutual economic exposure, officials involved in planning said.
Trump will be joined by business leaders including Tesla's Elon Musk and Apple's Tim Cook to discuss trade, arms sales to Taiwan, and the case of jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai with Xi.
Beijing wants the Trump administration to roll back existing controls on chipmaking equipment and commit that it "won't support independence or take actions that encourage a separatist political agenda," sources said.
Professor Alejandro Reyes noted that Trump "kind of needs China more than China needs him" as he seeks a foreign policy victory amid 60 per cent American disapproval of his Iran war.
