- The UK and Switzerland signed a memorandum of understanding to explore direct high-speed train services linking London St Pancras to Swiss cities.
- The agreement came after discussions between the UK’s transport lead, Heidi Alexander, and Switzerland’s transport official, Albert Rosti, aimed at overcoming technical and regulatory challenges.
- The initiative aims to reduce current seven-and-a-half-hour journeys to around five hours by eliminating the transfer in Paris and improving border and safety controls.
- Mr Rosti predicted services would likely launch in five to 10 years, while Ms Alexander called the agreement an important day and said direct trains offer an "incredible passenger experience."
- A joint working group will bring together UK and Swiss experts to overcome commercial, technical, and operational challenges before the service can begin.
