What is Signal and is it secure?
- A secret group chat between senior US officials, including Donald Trump's national security team, used the Signal app to discuss plans for a strike against the Iran-aligned Houthi rebel group in Yemen, inadvertently adding Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of the Atlantic, on March 11.
- Signal is considered one of the most secure messaging apps due to its end-to-end encryption, which scrambles messages so that only the sender and receiver can decipher them, making metadata invisible even to the company itself.
- The incident raised concerns from experts like Mick Ryan, a retired Australian Army Major General, about the security of classified information shared on Signal, potentially violating the Espionage Act, and highlighting systemic weaknesses that adversaries like Russia and China could exploit.
- Liam O'Shannessy, executive director at CyberCX, and other cybersecurity experts caution that while Signal's encryption is strong, human error, such as adding the wrong person to a chat, and vulnerabilities in devices, particularly desktop computers susceptible to malware, pose significant risks, with O'Shannessy stating that the most likely risk when sharing sensitive information on Signal was human error.
- Despite Signal's robust security features and recommendation by security experts for everyday use and protection against data breaches, identity theft, and surveillance, experts emphasize that it was never intended for discussing military plans and should not be used by government officials for conversations regarding national security, as even the most secure technology can't prevent human error.
