What Americans think about the environmental impact of AI, according to a new poll
A September 2025 poll shows 40% of Americans are highly concerned about AI's energy use and its contribution to climate change, surpassing worries about meat and aviation.
- The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago poll found about 4 in 10 U.S. adults are extremely or very concerned about AI's environmental impacts, exceeding worries about cryptocurrency mining, meat production and air travel.
- Electricity demand for AI systems is rising as AI data centers’ energy use is projected to more than double by 2030, mostly from power plants that burn coal, oil and natural gas, the International Energy Agency says.
- Major technology companies are investing in next-generation nuclear technology while the U.S. Department of Energy has identified federal sites for data centers, despite local communities opposed to water and energy demands.
- Political affiliation shapes concern levels as about half of Democrats are highly worried about AI's environmental effects, compared with one-third of independents and Republicans; Americans are split on AI's personal impact.
- Locally, residents opposing data centers fear land and water strain, while Aidan Collins and other concerned Americans say AI could advance clean energy and health care but also harm the environment, economy and society.
