Column: Preventing child abuse: Be the one who starts the conversation
- PAVE is hosting a 5k Color Run/Walk on April 5th at 111 East Burnett Street in Beaver Dam, with registration opening at 9am and the run starting at 9:30am, to raise awareness and funds for child abuse prevention in Dodge County through the Good Karma Brands John Moser Children's Radiothon.
- The run/walk costs $25 per participant, although youth can join for free, and will be followed by PAVE's annual Planting Pinwheels to acknowledge children affected by child abuse in Dodge County.
- Since 1983, April has been designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month , led by Prevent Child Abuse America, to focus on prevention, raise awareness, support families, and recognize the importance of communities working together to create safe environments for children.
- Nationally, US child welfare authorities make inquiries into the safety of more than 7.5 million children each year, with nearly 3.1 million child abuse or neglect cases investigated in 2022, according to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System .
- In 2022, almost 600,000 investigations confirmed abuse or neglect, resulting in 1,990 child fatalities, a rise of 170 from 2021, with 44% of these fatalities occurring in children under one year of age, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services, and 76% of abusers being a parent of the child.
