Suvendu Govt Ends Religion-Based Schemes in Bengal, Scraps State OBC List
The cabinet also approved free travel on state buses and a 7th pay commission, while ending religious honorarium schemes next month.
- On Monday, the West Bengal Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, approved the Annapurna Bhandar scheme, providing ₹3,000 monthly to women aged 25 to 60 starting June 1, and authorized free travel for women in state-run buses.
- Minister Agnimitra Paul announced that women currently receiving Lakshmir Bhandar benefits will transition to the new scheme via direct bank transfers, while applicants under the Citizenship Amendment Act process are also eligible.
- "The Bengal cabinet decided to discontinue government assistance to groups based on religious categorisation from June. The government also scraped the existing state OBC list as per the Calcutta High Court judgment and will set up an inquiry panel to decide quota eligibility," Paul added.
- Fulfilling a campaign promise, the BJP government approved the Seventh State Pay Commission for state employees and educational institutions. New electric buses will be introduced for public use, though no decision on Dearness Allowance was reached.
- Women who have not yet enrolled can apply for the Annapurna Scheme once the portal opens on June 1. Cabinet meetings will occur every 15 days to manage ongoing administrative affairs.
