Senedd Election 2026, Plaid Win Most Seats, Reform Top Newport, Labour Disaster
Plaid Cymru and Reform UK are expected to battle for the most seats as Labour faces losses under Wales’ new proportional system.
Counting began Friday for all 96 seats in the Welsh Senedd, with polling suggesting Labour could lose control for the first time in 27 years as Plaid Cymru and Reform UK battle for the highest number of seats.
This election marks the first use of a closed proportional list system, designed to better align seat counts with vote percentages across 16 constituencies, each electing six members to the expanded parliament.
Results from Gwynedd Maldwyn were revealed Friday at the Arfon Tennis Centre in Caernarfon, where six members were elected from 42 candidates, including Reform's Andrew Griffin and Claire Johnson-Wood alongside four Plaid Cymru representatives.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer acknowledged a "tough" night as Labour suffered disastrous local election losses across England, shedding hundreds of councillors, though he insisted he would remain in his post.
Predictions suggest Reform UK could secure 34 seats, making it the second-largest party in Wales; Reform UK leader Nigel Farage hailed the results as a "truly historic shift in British politics" away from Labour and Conservative dominance.
