We teach at a Florida university that agreed to cooperate with ICE – and we worry that it is making our students feel less safe
- Since March 2025, at least 15 Florida public universities and colleges, including Florida State College, have signed 287 agreements with ICE following Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's February 2025 directive to "deputize" university police to enforce federal immigration laws.
- In January 2025, President Donald Trump revoked Department of Homeland Security protections that classified universities as "sensitive" spaces, allowing campus police to collaborate with federal authorities and lowering barriers between university data and immigration enforcement.
- Many students now fear increased government surveillance, and these policies are worsening their "sense of belonging," with international doctoral students unable to return home due to travel bans affecting 75 countries in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East.
- Florida Atlantic University students staged a walkout on Feb. 25, 2026, to protest the school's ICE agreement, while Florida State University students called for a "sanctuary campus"; Florida International University officials stated no enforcement actions have occurred.
- Faculty have not received explicit guidance on how to respond if ICE agents enter campus, creating an intensifying climate of uncertainty as these policies heighten stress for all students, regardless of immigration status.
