Waymo’s driverless cars crash way less often than humans: report
IIHS said Waymo robotaxis had 85% fewer crashes than human drivers and 81% fewer injury crashes, based on a multi-year comparison.
- The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that Waymo vehicles were involved in 68% fewer crashes per mile than human drivers across four major US cities.
- Lead author Eric Teoh and researchers filtered robotaxi data to include only incidents meeting police-reporting thresholds, such as injuries or property damage over $1,000, to ensure fair comparison.
- While Waymo currently operates in 11 cities, the IIHS excluded Tesla from this study, noting that the company's robotaxi data remains unverified compared to information provided by other operators.
- Arizona State University associate professor Jameson Wetmore noted that while technology has improved, no system is foolproof, adding that crashes will occur regardless of what is behind the wheel.
- Public interest in autonomous vehicles remains limited, as a recent Gallup poll found just 19% of Americans would personally own or lease a driverless car, with only one in 10 having ever ridden in one.
