Waymo Acquires 5,458-Acre Proving Grounds Site in $220M Deal
The $220 million purchase adds a 5,500-acre test site with a 4-mile oval track and freeway course to Waymo’s closed testing network.
On June 5, Waymo acquired a 5,500-acre proving ground in Wittmann, Arizona, for $220 million from Route 14 Investment Partners LLC, a shell company associated with Apple.
Apple purchased the facility for $125 million in 2021 to support Project Titan, its multibillion-dollar autonomous vehicle program, which the tech giant abandoned in early 2024.
Purpose-Built for autonomous vehicle testing, the location includes a 115-acre city course, a 35-acre vehicle dynamics area, and a 4-mile oval track designed for freeway scenarios.
Waymo's acquisition rounds out its test network, complementing existing facilities at the Castle Proving Ground in California and the Transportation Research Center in Ohio.
Operating a fleet of close to 4,000 vehicles across more than 10 cities, Waymo plans to enter 20 additional markets, including Tokyo and London.
