Watertown Students, Parents Protest Superintendent’s Decision to Cancel ‘Flashdance’ Musical
Students and parents protested after the superintendent canceled the school musical, and the director stepped down as board members said they cannot vote on the decision.
On Monday, protesters gathered at a school board meeting after Interim Watertown School Superintendent James Feil canceled Watertown High School's planned spring production of the musical "Flashdance."
Feil canceled the production last week, calling it "a judgment call," despite the script being modified for a younger audience and approved by the principal and musical director.
During the meeting, Watertown High Schooler Jaxson Martin told the board, "It just sucks because we try hard and we practice hard and we work hard just for our efforts to be unseen and we feel overlooked."
The musical director resigned following the decision, while fellow music student Gabe Hinrichs stated, "It almost feels like they have a foot on the back of the music department's neck like trying to constantly suppress us."
This decision follows the district's ban last year of "A Mother of a Revolution," an instrumental piece with LGBTQ+ themes, fueling ongoing concerns about censorship within the Watertown Unified School District.
