Americans in Canada urge fellow expats to vote in high-stakes midterm elections
Expat groups say turnout is low, with more than 430,000 eligible U.S. voters in Canada and absentee ballots available by mail, email or fax.
With U.S. midterm elections approaching on Nov. 3, Americans living in Canada are mobilizing to vote, driven by political stakes in states like Michigan and Texas.
Georganne Burke, chapter lead for Republicans Overseas in Canada, said it has been a 'contentious year' as expats monitor the trade dispute between the United States and Canada.
Jessica Matwick, a dual citizen involved with Democrats Abroad, said voters should mobilize 'to put a stop to an unhinged administration and a legislative body that has abdicated their responsibility.'
Although more than 430,000 eligible U.S. voters reside in Canada, the Federal Voting Assistance Program estimates expat participation historically remains low at about 10 per cent.
The Nov. 3 midterms could see Democrats seize control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, potentially altering the path of President Donald Trump's presidency.
