Ofwat Accepts Welsh Water Redress Package Worth £44.7m Over Sewage Spills
The package will fund spill reductions, groundwater fixes and river improvements, and Ofwat said it is more than the fine it would have imposed.
On Friday, regulator Ofwat announced it accepted a £44.7 million redress package from Dwr Cymru Welsh Water following failures in the company's sewage network and oversight that led to excessive spills.
An investigation by Ofwat found 'serious and unacceptable breaches' in how the utility operated its wastewater assets, with the company failing to properly maintain infrastructure or provide adequate senior-level oversight.
The enforcement package includes £40.6 million to reduce spills and tackle groundwater, plus £4.1 million to improve river quality in 'extremely sensitive catchments,' funded entirely by the company rather than customers.
Customers face separate financial pressure, seeing average annual bills increase by 4.8% in April to £683 from £652, as the enforcement marks the latest action against a water sector facing heavy scrutiny.
New chief executive Roch Cheroux acknowledged the company has 'fallen short of the standards' expected, as Dwr Cymru Welsh Water initiates a major transformation program to improve governance and performance during 2025/26.
