The Vechtstromen Water Authority has inadvertently emitted more nitrogen in Hengelo for years than is permitted under the license. The water authority, active in eastern Drenthe and Overijssel, applied for an nature permit in 2018 for the construction of an energy plant on the grounds of a wastewater treatment plant. However, Vechtstromen employees recently discovered that the final administrative step in that process was not taken at the time.
