The independent watchdog is investigating after police used a taser and firearm on a man who threatened officers with a knife following two liquor store robberies.

- At 4:10 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to an NSLC at 1616 Grafton Street where staff reported the suspect sprayed a sensory irritant; forty minutes later, police responded to another at 6169 Quinpool Road with similar reports.

- The Serious Incident Response Team opened an investigation into the shooting and is asking witnesses to come forward, while Halifax Regional Police did not immediately respond to a CBC News request.
- Police say the robberies occurred Saturday afternoon in downtown Halifax at a pair of Crown‑owned Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation stores just blocks apart; this report was first published Jan. 18, 2026.
