Now one of the elms that was at the center of the infected elm fight is being cut down. Göran Folin, now 87, sat in a tree during the Elm Fight. Now, 54 years later, he is at the place in Kungsträdgården in Stockholm where it happened.

On Thursday, the sick elm tree in Kungsträdgården was taken down branch by branch. The tree felling is an attempt to prevent the spread of elm disease to the other ancient elm trees. “They show no signs of being sick now, but we know that they will die too, eventually,” says Elisabet Elfström, city gardener.
