Washington resident charged with conspiracy in Canada school shooting pleads not guilty
Investigators say she helped conceal the plot by agreeing to share a livestream, send money and delete messages.
On Thursday, Melody Bryant of Bellingham, Washington, pleaded not guilty in District Court to charges of conspiring to commit murder in Canada stemming from the February shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
Prosecutors allege Bryant facilitated the plot by distributing a livestream, providing money, and advising Jesse Van Rootselaar on deleting messages to keep the attack secret.
Van Rootselaar killed eight people and wounded 27 in Tumbler Ridge, including five children ages 12 and 13, in an area more than 1,000 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, British Columbia, near the Alberta border.
Bryant remains detained pending a Dec. 21 trial, though public defender Greg Murphy noted she attempted to dissuade Van Rootselaar from the attack, a detail investigators acknowledge.
Federal charges accuse Bryant of conspiring to murder individuals in a foreign country, involving complex digital coordination that investigators continue examining as the case proceeds toward trial.
