Washington pipe bomb suspect has confessed, prosecutors say
Brian Cole confessed to planting unexploded pipe bombs at both party headquarters, citing distrust in election integrity and disapproval of both parties, prosecutors said.
- On Jan. 5, 2021, Brian Cole, 30, of Virginia planted two IEDs outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters and Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., and neither exploded.
- Cole told investigators he believed the 2020 election had been tampered with, disliked both parties, was not openly political, and was influenced by YouTube, Reddit, and The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
- During a 90-minute interview, prosecutors say Cole, arrested on Dec. 4, detailed building, transporting, and planting pipe bombs, with credit card records and bomb components found in his home.
- Facing detainment requests, Brian Cole is due in court Tuesday for a detention hearing in Washington federal court as prosecutors urged detention, charging him with two explosives-related offenses.
- The arrest caps a five-year investigation reopened at FBI direction, and the pipe bombs were found about 1 p.m. on Jan. 6, diverting police during the Capitol riot.
