Russia Agrees to Halt Recruitment of Ghanaians for Ukraine War
Putin said Ghanaians will no longer be allowed to join the war, after Ghana reported 62 deaths and 15 missing.
- Following last week's Russia-Africa summit, President Putin agreed to halt the recruitment of Ghanaian nationals to fight in Ukraine, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed in a Facebook post.
- President John Mahama raised concerns about the practice with Putin at the summit. Ghana had reported last month that citizens were being 'tricked' into joining, following unfulfilled August promises from Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to end 'illegal recruitment.'
- As of mid-August, more than 270 Ghanaians had fought for Russia, with 62 killed and 15 missing. Ukraine has identified nearly 46,000 foreign fighters from 151 countries, including more than 5,000 Africans, underscoring the scale of foreign involvement.
- Beyond the recruitment ban, Ghana and Russia agreed to pursue development of a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant to bolster energy security and support industrialization, Ablakwa said. The two countries also reached a new defense pact covering equipment acquisition.
- Several African countries, including Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon, and The Gambia, have reported similar grievances regarding citizens lured into Russian military contracts. Russia continues to step up enlistment across the continent to address personnel shortages.
